“I was able to see this beautiful creation emerging from my canvas. My confidence soared.

Jacqueline supplied everything; the easels, canvas, brushes, acrylics and medium and knowledge .

You name it we had it in our grasp. Jacqueline was the most generous of teachers with her excellent tutoring. The most unselfish thing an artist can do is to pass on to other artists all of the knowledge that has taken her a lifetime to amass.

Jacqueline is a no nonsense teacher and we had enormous fun. The outcome of the course was two complete paintings and I can say that my art was exceptional under her tutelage.

My friends have been totally astounded at the quality of my art and both pieces hang proudly on my wall at home. Jacqueline showed us how to make the ordinary extraordinary.”

NOW I SEE THE LIGHT!

FlowerJust wanted to let you know we are all still talking about the wonderful workshop and how we are all still on a 'high'.

Most of us have done another painting or are finishing one.   It was very inspiring being with you for a week.

I had an amazing experience the other morning, light was just coming into my bedroom and my damask curtains just showed all the tonal shades, I have never noticed that before.

You did tell us we would see things differently now!  I knew exactly how i would paint it – in fact it would be a good exercise for me to do.  Thank you for teaching me another way to look at things.

Kindest regards Jacqueline Smith, Melbourne.

Jacqueline with the two paintings

Here is Jacqueline with the two paintings she produced in six days during the Blooms 1 and 2 Painting workshop January 2013 in Melbourne. Jac has since joined the 12 month program and is looking forward to more painting and selling her work.

What if I showed you how to make money from art?

Email Jac in bootsAllow me to share my story with you as I sit here now in my very own beautiful gallery and painting studio, Salon Rouge Gallery, on the edge of the glorious Barossa Valley, with just the sound of the birds and my favourite arts program on the radio.

My paints and palette are set up to paint with a huge canvas to capture the arm load of almond blossoms collected from a country lane, I have to pinch myself to make sure it’s all real, that I really have created this amazing lifestyle for myself.

Not only do I call my own shots on the hours I work, and when, but my time table is my own to design. Best of all my passion for painting fits around my family’s needs.

I am there to meet the kids for afternoon tea when the school bus arrives in Kapunda from the next country town, at 4pm.

Hannibal and Lily love to come to the studio to do their own thing while I finish up for the day. If this didn’t fit in with my family I can tell you I wouldn’t be doing it.  Even greater than my all consuming passion for painting and creativity is the inspiration for doing it all in the first place, my two children who are my biggest pride and joy on this planet.

My life wasn’t always this wonderful!

Jac studio portrait bloomsstriped apronI didn’t always have a dream life style. I once worked in a job in an advertising agency for 60 gruelling hours a week but paid for 40 hours.

Weekends? What were they? My time was not my own. I often felt unappreciated  (though my bosses were lovely,) because of the amount of times my work got trashed by fickle clients and changing marketing plans.

I had little control over my life or what happened at work. I decided there had to be more to life than going home pathetically teary about another work disappointment and too many hours of stressful work conditions.

Yep, that was me up until 12 short years ago.

During those years as a single woman working in the corporate world I nurtured, fed and watered my private dream of becoming an artist. Bit by bit I chipped away at the big picture.

I studied and eventually finished a full time degree course at College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales as a mature student, fitting this in with a hectic work time table and a share house in Rozelle, Sydney.

  • I attended workshops with the amazing Graham Nickson of the New York Studio School when he came to Australia
  • I went to 5 exhibition openings in Sydney a week to see bodies of work by emerging and established artists
  • I painted in all my spare time, and read art books and journals
  • for holidays I  jumped on a plane to cultural centres such as Paris, New York and London to absorb the best they had, scour the art museums, the art supply shops, the parks and gardens.
  • I gained work experience in top Sydney art galleries learning behind the scenes
  • I spent all my spare income on art materials
  • I rented a painting studio in an artist warehouse and spent all my after business hours painting.
  • I dragged bunches of exquisite sunflowers home and painted them in oils with my bare fingers.
  • I painted enormous rose canvases and hung them in my share house rental.

My inspiration came from a dream.

828-A-Black Magic spotted

During this time of change I had a powerful dream that would change my life and give me the courage to eventually cut the ties with an old life and leap into the new. Though scared as hell, I trusted it would somehow work out.

Remember I had no painting and marketing mentor holding my hand. I had to work it out for myself.

Perhaps you’ve been in a position before where you don’t know all the answers but you decide to do something anyway.

That’s where I was.

In my dream I found myself standing inside a deep red rose that was like a big dark velvety auditorium. A diva with a magnificent bust wrapped in crimson red silk threw out an arm and let forth the most wonderful vibrato at the top of her lungs that took hold of my whole being in the most sublime way. I then was transported to a scene where I was the observer watching myself paint the most exquisite and ginormous canvas with a deep dark red glowing rose.

I woke up motivated to work out how to paint these uplifting beauties. Over the years, despite my university painting requirements, I kept returning to the blooms as subject matter. In panel

Yes I did have my doubts. It wasn’t all plain sailing.

Don’t worry, when I started out, I had loads of concerns including;

  • But I can’t draw
  • I’m totally inexperienced. Can I really become an artist?
  • I have trouble handling the paint
  • Colour mixing wheels bamboozle me
  • People will laugh at my work.
  • It’s embarrassing to declare myself an artist even though I feel like one inside
  • What if I couldn’t solve a problem myself
  • How can I have this in my life and how can I support myself financially?
  • How will I fit it all in? I’m already so busy.
  • How will I know when the painting is finished?
  • Will anyone actually be interested in what I do?
  • I even had the feeling I might be arrested and told to stop!

Then I found the key to painting quickly & beautifully

sept 1395If there were mistakes to be made I made them.

Until I devised a simple system that meant my paintings progressed logically and assuredly to beautiful results every time which I developed for myself so I could paint the beautiful flowers in my dreams. As well doing the uni homework, I wanted to pursue these images I dreamed about.

I decided the best way to control the outcome of the painting was to paint from a photo. So I took lots of photos of red roses until I found the ONE that felt perfect and like my dream.

Barn front by Karalee Angel Smith photographyLater on I found myself pregnant with my second child knowing I would need to prepare for life as a single parent. This brought new concerns such as;

  • How will I support myself and my family if I paint?
  • I have one child and another on the way, with no support. How can I even afford to paint let alone pay for child care? How will I paint with two children?
  • The beautiful old barn I renovated to become our home.

My life script went AWOL so I decided to take a leap of faith.

I had bought an old dilapidated stone barn in the Barossa Valley. I wanted to be with my children and paint from home as there would be one full time parent for them. My brother came up with designs for the barn and I found a good builder who could renovate it in Kapunda. Before I left my job and my life in Sydney, I painted up an exhibition of beautiful Blooms paintings whilst pregnant with Lily.

Coates Striped PeonyI even wrote my own PR.

With nothing to lose I sent it to magazines and newspapers.

To my surprise several magazines picked up on my floral images and published the dates of the exhibition and a colourful picture of my work. It suddenly looked real and important splashed across the media!

As I was having my exhibition and inviting more and more people to the opening night, I knew I had crossed my biggest hurdle: giving myself permission to be an artist and letting everyone know about it, no matter what they might think of me.
Of course it all felt like new territory.

I felt terribly audacious and in the weeks leading to the event like someone might tap me on the shoulder and stop me!  But no-one stopped me, and the opening night was packed to full capacity with the crowd spilling onto the street. I just fit into my stretchy evening dress with my 8 months pregnant bulging belly.

With my son Hanni on my hip, we sashayed round the space saying hi to everyone.

The fear evaporated and I was having fun! Nearly everyone I had invited came along to see my 27 paintings. Friends and family helped pour wine, offer food, and place red dots next to my paintings which meant they had sold. What a relief to see the red dots!

I had spent my last dollars on the alcohol for the opening!

A group of young girls sang Acapella.  The whole night felt like a launch and celebration of my art and the new chapters that were unfolding.

That exhibition really launched my business

My exhibition details and paintings got published nationally in House and Garden magazine, Home Beautiful and The Sydney Morning Herald.  This important exhibition in December 2000 sold over half, about $18,000 in its first week. Not bad for someone starting out. Although nowhere near the figures I had been earning in the advertising world it was an income nevertheless and meant I could support my young family.

I took another $15,000 of orders for painting commissions providing me with a brand new additional income. It felt wonderful to have abundance at this time from doing what I loved as a looked down the barrel of single motherhood!

Not long after as a mother to two children under two, living in my stone barn in the Barossa renovated to a home and studio, I was asked by a local florist, Viva The Flower Store, to teach my blooms paintings to the local women. These were the smart business women and ladies of leisure of the Barossa I hadn’t as yet met coming to my barn home to learn how to paint roses. I had to perform! I was willing to give it a try. My reputation was at stake!

My first time teaching others to paint the blooms way

I had never taught before. They had never painted! I thought, “I can’t let my students go through what I did. I am going to come up with a compassionate kind method that delivers incredible, immediate results. If I don’t I’m history!”

So I took my Blooms Painting Method™ and applied it to this group of 12 trusting and eager women who most certainly couldn’t draw or paint but were looking to me for the answers, a pleasant lunch and a glass of champers. I didn’t want to spoil their day. Don’t worry, I was NERVOUS. My reputation would be shot if I didn’t get this right.

Workshop St Johns 002I decided to start with a simple red rose.

Well, let me tell you, by the end of the day I had a group of very happy customers. Step by step, their beautiful blooms paintings unfolded before our eyes. The Blooms Painting Method™ ensures no one goes missing in action.

You don’t have to be able to draw with my techniques.  Although the entire group painted the same rose, with the same method, the extraordinary thing was, the paintings all looked different.

We all have our own hand writing, and whether we know it or not, our own personal style comes through from the way we see things, our preferences, and our sense of touch on the canvas. Even though they had followed the system with the same photo in that first class the paintings were unique.

I later taught this workshop in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Moree, Grafton,Young, Kapunda, Adelaide, Elliston and even taught in Wellington , New Zealand. I added a lot more reference material so students had plenty of variety to choose from.

My PR efforts lead to a magnificent ten page spread in Inside Out and an eight page spread in Australian Country Style. Suddenly I had the very pleasant dilemma of trying to keep up with all the business offers and work that came my way, including invitations to take my images onto a giftware range, and David Jones wanting to stock prints nationally.

The fabulous ten page magazine spread that put my artwork on the map.

MAg spread MAg spread 2

4 pages of the 10 page spread in Inside Out Magazine August 2003 which let everyone know I was an artist, what I was painting and launched the workshops. As a result I was flooded with emails, painting commissions and business offers. From which came gift ware products, a print on canvas range and interstate students.

Here’s what my students  said about the ONE DAY BLOOMS WORKSHOP

“From beginner to budding artist- great full on day.
Good bye office- hello Art Studio”

Marian, Wellington, New Zealand.

“Fantastic day! Your support and encouragement are priceless
forming a very supportive environment which allows us to let the
creative person inside to come out. Thank you.”

Barbara Laurenson, Wellington, New Zealand.

What if your painting homework actually results in beautiful paintings you can sell straight away?

JAc teaching
The student  who painted this painting later sold it for $1450

I went on to teach other blooms and large canvas workshops. Always with successful results for everybody with my simple and compassionate Jacqueline Coates Blooms Painting Method™, always growing and improving the teaching offer. I tested my method on literally hundreds and hundreds of customers making it possible every time for a person of no experience to walk away with masterpieces and their eyebrows rearranged in an expression of amazement at what is possible.

If you think this sounds different to any other art course you’ve heard about before, you are right.

Then I realised that my students wanted more. After a great week of painting with me, they sought more connection and more development for their work. In short, they wanted whatever it is I am having, and guess what! I am happy to supply it.

The sense of satisfaction I get from seeing my students achieve and gain confidence rapidly in their work, their new found purpose, and meeting these great people, all fill me with joy. So I developed a 12 month program that would not only teach you to paint but teach you how to sell your work as well.

The difference between a rich artist and a poor artist: the rich artist has learned how to market their artwork.

Girl with money

Sadly, hundreds of students exit art college and university every year creating unsaleable artwork and depending on a commercial gallery system to support them. Tricky when the gallery commission is as high as 45% plus expenses. This is a no win situation keeping artists poor.

Going to university is a privilege but not everyone has the time or money to indulge themselves in this way without making a living at the end of it. The professors are great but they are not making income from their art. They are on wages. They are not confronted by needing to make an income from their art as they get a regular pay check from university. Ask yourself… are they the best people to teach you how to forge a path as an artist if they are not relying on income from their art themselves?

As a single mum with my young family dependent on me for everything, I created multiple ways to make money from my art. I am thankful for the challenges because they brought me fabulous opportunities I can now celebrate and share with others. I grew from the experience, became resilient and a successful business woman as well as a successful painter to provide for my family.

I became extremely resourceful and highly creative in business and communication to ensure my paintings produced an income for myself and my family. This is the exact opposite to most artists who are frequently mute and let the gallery do the talking for them if any communication with the public takes place at all because that is what has been taught.

Recently I have been studying with Australia’s top online marketing consultants and their highly successful associates. I’ve tried out many new techniques and business models to my art practice so I can confidently share my new business incredibly expansive business building secrets with you for your painting business. So as well as my practical advice and experiences I have been educating myself in the business world as well to create a system of assured success for you. You too can create an enviable reputation and growing income for yourself should you wish to do so.

Just as you are growing I am constantly growing too and that is what makes this course unique. It’s alive, passionate, informed and of the highest quality.

Michelle Endersby Month 3 shot

Michelle Endersby, Bon Beach, Victoria, with some of her painting homework.
She also has produced some beautiful landscapes inspired from her visit to Greece.

Hi!

I'm in Month 3 of Jacqueline Coates' totally transformational 12 month Blooms Make Money From Art Program and already I am beginning to find amazing development in my painting skills.

Exercises in colour blending and colour mapping have really helped the way I approach a painting.

I find I am so much more confident in front of a blank canvas.

Everything is starting to flow so much better. My paintings now have a better finish and colour harmony.

Jacqueline's inspiration & techniques have shown me a world beyond my imagination & this is only the early stages!’

Jodie, Melbourne, is a busy mum of 5 year old triplets. She created these two paintings in six days. Then I showed her how to create a large canvas in 1 day.

Lucy’s first painting in the course was of a magnificent pink peony. She then painted magnolias. Now she’s setting up her art studio at home in Perth so she can paint and sell her paintings.

Lisa is a highly successful businesswoman by day.  Now she’s an artist as well. Lisa is a student of the 12 month program. With no previous painting experience but a desire to immerse herself in creativity, colour and paint, Lisa is enjoying a new string to her bow.

Caroline from Bendigo, Victoria, wanted to do something for herself now the kids are older. Now the kids cheer her on as she achieves success after success with her paintings!

Student’s art featured in the pages of a magazine!

Student’s artJudy of Berwick Victoria is in Month 7 of my program and has already been interviewed by a trade journal about her paintings she has been able to create thanks to the Make Money From Art 12 Month Program. A section of my manual gave her the confidence to develop her PR story for journalists.

Judy is also creating a large roses painting commission for a client in amongst painting up her homework. Judy is gaining immense joy and satisfaction expressing her love of horticulture in her paintings. She will be teaching the Blooms Program as well in the coming year.

Why painting feels like falling in love and brings such joy

When we paint we connect with a part of the brain that gives us the same signals as for when we fall in love. As we become immersed in the colour we enter into another world.

NoelaThe real world drops  away as we create, enter calmness, and get in the flow.

The body triggers similar feelings of euphoria as when you are in love. You feel high from painting.

You get to feel your highest most enjoyable emotions.

Not to mention the great feeling you get from producing something beautiful. It is so satisfying.

No wonder art therapy is used to turn prison inmates into happy creative pussycats!

No wonder I have been a happy & satisfied single mum for years. But don’t believe me, listen to what Noela had to say about her Blooms painting experience.

Artist experiences love butterflies whilst painting!

By the way Noela had an interested buyer for her beautiful peony painting by the end of her Blooms 1 & 2 workshop.

Decide how you want to feel.

Transform your world with painting then turn your painting into a living so you can do more of what you love!
Why do something you don’t love when you can paint?

The Jacqueline Coates Blooms Painting Method ™ has seven simple steps that anyone can do.

If you can count to 7 you can apply my Blooms Painting Method™.

_MG_05521.  ‘I don’t know what to paint.’

Perfect, because I supply you with brilliant choices every month in the form of exquisite colour photo reference. All you have to do is choose what you like best and I provide step by step instructions on how to proceed from woo to go.
I also show you how to shoot your own photo reference so you can paint from a photo that will guarantee your success on the canvas. While you are creating your pool of shots choose from my shots which are worth thousands of dollars when painted up. I set you up for success!

2.  ‘I can’t draw to save myself’

I have two easy peasy ways of getting a proportionate image quickly and easily onto the canvas. You’ll never have a concern with your drawing skills again. The funny thing is that after a while you will be able to draw as unconsciously you are training your eye to see with my method. Anyone can do this. No need to be born with a creative bone in your body or have attended any previous art classes of any kind.
No previous experience necessary.

COlour mixing Sydney3.  ‘I don’t know how and where to start!’

Great! My Blooms Painting Method ™ means you get to preview your painting before you paint it. You will always know where you are going and what you are creating. No uncertainty here. You’ll love the Blooms Underpainting stage. With my Blooms Method™ I show you how to create a tonal map before you get into the colour. This gives you a chance to sort out all your shapes before thinking about the next stage. We break it into bite size chunks with a place to start and a place to finish.

4.  ‘I am confused about colour’

Brilliant,  because I show you a devastatingly effective Blooms speed colour exercise that puts you in control of your colour palette from the get go.
What the paint companies don’t want you to know! This simple exercise will also save you hundreds of dollars as you will know how to mix those gorgeous colours instead of having to buy them all individually. Live off 5- 8 tubes of colour if you wish.

WORkshop studio activity Sydney 20125.  ‘What do I do next?’

After the Blooms tonal underpainting you will paint with your colour. The painting starts coming into being and it is very
exciting to see the progress with every stroke of paint that goes onto the canvas.

6.  ‘I’m not sure how to finish or when to finish a painting’

Then you’ll love my 7 steps to finessing your Blooms painting that will make your painting look professional. From cleaning up edges to checking the depth of the tones and colour correcting, this is where it all comes together!

Kerri Fitz glazing7.  ‘How do I get my painting to look professionally finished?’.

Nothing like an oil glaze to put the finishing touch on your masterpiece.

I show you how. Also how to use oil pigments in your glaze.

Kerri Fitzpatrick of Sydney puts the finishing touches on her stunning iris with gold leaf background created in Blooms 2 which is an integral part of the 12 month painting program.

Mum and daughter team Daryl and Brodie Grant came along to the August Blooms workshop in Kapunda.

12 year old Brodie demonstrated that painting is a cinch. The two paintings on the left are by Brodie. Daryl painted a gorgeous Julia Roses and a Magnolia that had us all swooning.

Lee TeusnerI made $2750 in my first month of the course!

Jac portrait cream roses smiling to camera close up RFWake up to the best job in the entire world!

As an artist you get to inspire others, and provide a window onto a world of inspiration most people don’t participate in on a day to basis.
Let’s face it, life in the burbs working in a 9-5 job for someone else can be a banal sort of life. In my view, part of the artist’s role is to uplift and help everyday people feel great.

Your paintings can move people.  They can put a smile on someone’s dial. You and you alone can be the reason someone wakes up in a better mood because they see your gorgeous artwork the moment they open their peepers.

A love of beauty and grandeur and your determination to bring more of it down upon this planet can be your way of making a huge difference to this world.

The cool thing is to be an artist you don’t have to be born one, have left school and gone to art college or any other traditional path. You can decide right now for yourself  and start being one today.

ASK YOURSELF:

How much longer are you going to stay doing something you don’t really love doing?

When will you give yourself permission to make your life the most wonderful masterpiece?

Isn’t it time to smell the roses?!

Follow your path instead of someone else’s!
